Laserlabor

The institute’s laser lab is located in building L1|02, Petersenstr. 28. On an area of approximately 600 m2 various laser and detection systems are employed for the highly accurate and precise determination of velocity, temperature and concentration fields. The methods are applied to study a large variety of chemically reactive turbulent flows with a focus on combustion fundamentals.

What we measure

Measurement of velocity

  • Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDA), pointwise measurement of up to three components of velocity simultaneously
  • Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), planar and volumetric measurement of up to three components of velocity simultaneously, repetition rate between 10 Hz and 30 kHz

Measurement of temperature and concentration of fluids

  • Laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIF), pointwise or planar measurement of temperature and concentration particularly regarding minor species, repetition rate between 10 Hz and 10 kHz
  • Simultaneous Raman/Rayleigh spectroscopy, pointwise or one-dimensional measurement of temperature and concentration of major species
  • Rayleigh spectroscopy, planar measurement of densities and temperatures, repetition rate up to 10 kHz
  • Coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS), pointwise measurement of gas temperatures
  • Laser-induced phosphor thermometry for fluid temperature measurements

Spectroscopy at surfaces

  • Laser-induced phosphor thermometry for pointwise or planar measurement of surface temperatures

Spray and droplet diagnostics

  • Phase Doppler Velocimetry (PDA), pointwise measurement of droplet diameter and droplet velocity
  • Mie Scattering, planar visualisation of droplet distributions
  • Planar Raman and laser-induced fluorescence/phosphorescence measurements for measuring gas composition around evaporating droplets and droplet temperatures
