Maritime shipping transports around 80 % of global trade and is a comparably efficient mode of transport in terms of emissions per tonne-kilometer. Nevertheless, the sector as a whole emits around 2 – 3 % of the total greenhouse gas emissions. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is calling for a 40% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2030 compared to 2008, which cannot be achieved with the current state of the art on alternative fuels such as hydrogen or ammonia in combustion engines. In the CliNeR-ECo project a modular system for retrofit solutions is to be developed that adapts marine diesel engines for operation with e-methanol. Combustion of methanol does not produce nitrogen- or sulfur-oxides as is the case with heavy fuel oil (HFO) or marine diesel oil (MDO). In addition, CO2 emissions can be reduced when methanol is produced with electricity from renewable energy sources.

For the experimental investigation, a flowbench test rig is being developed and constructed to make the cylinder head geometry optically accessible. This allows the investigation of the flow, spray and wall film formation in a realistic geometry using optical diagnostics. The data support the validation of a simulation model being developed in parallel.
